Reggae & Ragga Culture. New Work by Wayne Tippetts

Wayne Tippetts lived and worked in Jamaica in the late 80s and early 90s documenting the thriving Reggae culture and also the emerging Ragga and Dancehall scene with its daring home-made outfits, street dances, and queens-of-the-night with their very own ‘Ghetto Couture’ who, Cinderella-like, would slip away at dawn back to the humdrum life in the ghettos of Down Town Kingston.

During this time, he also taught photography at the Edna Manley College in Jamaica’s capital. The work has also been extensively exhibited worldwide - including galleries in Jamaica, New York, London and Sydney. The Dancehall images also form part of the permanent Collection at the ReggaeXplosion Photography Museum, in Ocho Rios, Island Village Jamaica.

His unique images give us a detailed insight into the scene and capture the unique fashions and styles of the artists and the people which attended Dancehall events throughout Jamaica.
