In a flat a student prepares for a night out. She pulls a jumper over a pair of ripped tights and is suddenly swamped in wool. On a nearby high street it seems the whole town got the memo: wearing black is the strict dress code. At Somerset House bloggers and journalists flock to Fashion Week: amongst them a man wearing billowing trousers. Or is it a skirt?

At a glance these people may have precious little in common. Yet all of these people could be linked to a Japanese design revolution that shook up fashion both on the catwalk and in the streets.

Rewind to the late 70s and early 80s, and much of the Western world is in the grip of colour mania. Hippies are rocking flares and florals, and Bowie fans are Glam Rocking. Wizard of colour blocking, Yves Saint Laurent, works his magic on the catwalk and dancers flaunt neon Lycra in the gym. Press pause in 1983, however, and two young Japanese designers are causing a stir.
